"Very Special - Meerkats Anthem"

After so many months, at last I can bring a new entry to this blog.

Here's the hymn of the Meerkats, such as I imagined it. They song through this verses about things of long ago, but not for that lost in memory.
The music is exactly like in "The village of dwarves".

If we look behind a million stories
and far beyond the tide of countless years...
We'll find the Firsts of our Kin.
Royal consorts, Lady and King,
who then gave birth to the firstborns
in our Meerkats Hometown.

The Sun, those times, was like a daily blessing
and every night a haven full of peace.
We had an endless Spring
and the cold rain would only bring
a gift of hope and renewal,
in our Meerkats Hometown.

The Eagles used to carry happy Meerkats
and give them all an hour ride each day.
We always allowed Snakes
in the Burrows to sleep and stay
with newborns cuddling to them
in our Meerkats Hometown.

Many of us would watch the stars delighted,
like trying to read a book in each of them.
The Constellations up there
always watching over our dreams,
were prized above any treasure
in our Meerkats Hometown.

And now, of course, we must get to the story
of those who built the first 'Kat family.
The elder Lord and his wife
have become a legend in life,
and now we'll never forget them
in our Meerkats Hometown.

Those unforgettable times
can be felt right under our feet,
while shining inside our hearts
like the morning light.

"Meerkats Hymn To Their God"

"Our God comes each day from a place
far beyond our sight.
He gives all the warmth we need after a long night
passed somehow buried alive.
So we see Him arise from His hidden lands
until we're ready to go in search
of our morning first meal".

"We Can't Live Sepparated"

The growing fame they have gained since the Meerkat Manor series started, shouldn't turn suddenly into bad news for them just because someone wants one or two Meerkats at home. Don't steal them from zoos; they were not created to be our pets.
Besides, every Meerkat has a function in the group and for that, is important and almost unreplaceable.
But considering what has been happening, the time came for us to stop the stealing.

"Remembered Ones"

Shakespeare, son of Flower and Zaphod, was born on November 8, 2002, along with Mozart, Einstein and Freud; all of the Whiskers family.

I made very few entries dedicated to Shakespeare and, however, he was one of the most faithful Meerkats in when the Mob needed him.
In his first year (March 18, 2003), he lost one of his brothers, Freud.
But Shakespeare lived enough to take care of many young Meerkats; the long list included Monkulus, Armantia Ditch, Zarathustra, Mitch, Cruise and Jogu.
One day an enemy group attacked the Whiskers and took the little Mitch to leave him in the open, but soon it was Shakespeare who found and took him back to the security of their burrow.
On November 23, 2004, he was one of the brave Meerkats who cornered a Puff Adder Snake... Being bitten in face and leg. But some days later he was recovered from the venom and ready to continue his babysitting of newborns.
When Flower gave birth to Petra, Macchu Pichu, Ningaloo and Popkat, he was there to take care of the babies every time their mother was out to forage.
Staying always with Flower and Zaphod, Shakespeare kept doing his main job, and when some Meerkats of her group rejoined the Whiskers -Flower giving birth to Flo, Kim and Finn-, he babysat them as well.
But one day the Lazuli attacked their burrow; Shakespeare first protected the young Meerkats. After the Whiskers chased the enemies away, he disappeared and left his life on March 11, 2005.

Here are three pictures brought to remember him better, especially with the third.

"Another Legend About Meerkats"

This tale starts a few centuries after the Gods created every living being and Wele, for his part, the first Meerkats.
In a deep part of the Kalahari, not very far from a river, there lives a group of Bushmen composed of eleven families. Many of them recollect fruits, water and plants, while the others guard their cattle.
But soon they find out how hard it's to protect their priceless livestock.
Every two or three days, Jackals come and kill a Goat. And sometimes, about thirty minutes after a mysterious hissing noise, one of the Goats falls heavily to the ground, dying a few moments later.
Such situation goes on for three months; however, the Bushmen know how hard would be finding a better place to settle in.
But when one of their children dies because of a Cape Cobra, the time comes to find some solution.
Oree-Khwe, their Chief, knows many places, but some of them would take at least one day of march,
And several people, who had been praying, bring to all the same (osada) question: "Why would the Gods create creatures that could kill them and their Goats?"
To this, not even Oree-Khwe has any answer, but if all they can do is keep praying, they will.

Less than two months later, the Bushmen loose seven Goats hunted by Jackals and two more bitten by Cape Cobras; their desperate beggings seem completely ignored by the Gods. And Oree-Khwe finally goes right after sunrise in search of another place to live. He will be out there for many hours.

Suddenly, a young shepherd sees something wonderful: a group of small creatures seem to fight with a Snake, But they don't attack the Cape Cobra; they simply push her away, forcing her to go in one direction. When she leaves, the Shepherd goes to tell his people about it as soon as he can.
Now they start to feel that their prayers have been heard after all.
When their Chief returns having chosen a new place for them all, the Bushmen tell him what Kusi has witnessed. Then Oree-Khwe and the others start to watch closely how Meerkats behave in front of any danger and soon they learn new ways to defend the lives of themselves along with their livestock's.

The next morning, very early, everyone goes to see the Meerkats seemingly watching the rising Sun; Then some new chants are made thanking their Gods, but also to those creatures who taught them so much. Since that day, they call them "Jua Malaika" * (Angels of the Sun), the protectors against all evil creatures which from now on will harm their livestock no more.

*(This is Swahili -literally "Sun Angel"-, but I'm not sure to find these words in the language of Bushmen).

"Meerkats Go To The Far West"

Being born in a miniature old Wild West town – perhaps this nameless baby Meerkat should be called ‘Billy the Kid’.

But the tiny critter is no ‘lone ranger’ – being one of triplets recently born at the Parrot Zoo in Friskney.

“We built a western-style town for the Meerkats which started off with just a saloon bar,” said zoo owner Steve Nichols. “But it now has a bank, jail, sheriff’s office, general stores, a church and graveyard complete with tombstones.
“It opened in September and we let them go in as an experiment at first but we could soon see they were hanging out and congregating around the church.”
And it was some time later inside this miniature church that a female Meerkat gave birth to the triplets. Their parents were both rescued by the zoo.
The three lively babies are yet to be named – but staff at the zoo are inviting suggestions from visitors.
“Because they were born in the church we have had a lot of biblical names suggested,” said Steve.
This is the second time they have given birth at the Parrot Zoo and its Meerkat enclosure is now one of the largest in the UK, measuring 120 ft by 40 ft.

Steve added: “The meerkats are by far the most popular attraction - we’ve got more than 2,000 parrots, lemurs, reptiles and other mammals, but when people see the Meerkats they just turn to jelly.”

"Two Princes And One Flower"

For this entry, as you'll see immediately, I used an ancient and very well known ballad; or at least, the form. In this case, the song tells of when Youssarian and Zaphod met Flower, to build later the Whiskers Mob.

Anyway, here it is... Hope you enjoy it, then.

There lived a Lady in some desert land.
-Feel the warmth of the morning Sun-
She had the greatest law in her hands.
Fa, la la la la, la la la la la.

Sometimes the Flower, sometimes the Rose.
-Feel the warmth of the morning Sun-
But always mother and Queen for us.
Fa, la la la la, la la la la la.

Her star shone brighter since she was born.
-Feel the warmth of the morning Sun-
She just got stronger being left alone.
Fa, la la la la, la la la la la.

Two Meerkat Princes then found her way,
-Feel the warmth of the morning Sun-
but only one could share her days.
Fa, la la la la, la la la la la.

Would you please, fair Lady, be my wife?
-Feel the warmth of the morning Sun-
Say yes and you'll have the happiest life.
Fa, la la la la, la la la la la.

But I can give you a hoard of dreams
-Feel the warmth of the morning Sun-
turning to children in every Spring.
Fa, la la la la, la la la la la.

And so the other Prince had to wait.
-Feel the warmth of the morning Sun-
Yet marry that Queen was his real fate.
Fa, la la la la, la la la la la.

He won her heart to stay by her side.
-Feel the warmth of the morning Sun-
Of great Kings now he had the pride.
Fa, la la la la, la la la la la.

A dinasty with his wife he made
-Feel the warmth of the morning Sun-
that ne'er in centuries would fade.
Fa, la la la la, la la la la la.

She was the biggest Queen by own right,
-Feel the warmth of the morning Sun-
and he was Zaphod his valiant Knight.
Fa, la la la la, la la la la la.

This royal couple would always stand
-Feel the warmth of the morning Sun-
just like the rock lying beneath the sand.
Fa, la la la la, la la la la la.

When face to face with black death she was,
-Feel the warmth of the morning Sun-
she surely left bleeding her nose.
Fa, la la la la, la la la la la.

And now that Flower will always stay
-Feel the warmth of the morning Sun-
in Zaphod's arms till the end of days.
Fa, la la la la, la la la la la.
